The Neurological Sciences started in Vellore for the first time in India and South and West Asia by Dr. Jacob Chandy in 1949. The Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery came into existence with 3 beds in the men’s medical ward, 3 beds in the women’s medical ward, 5 beds in the men’s surgical ward, 4 beds in the gynaecology ward and 2 beds in the paediatric ward. Similarly, assistants and junior doctors were ‘borrowed’ for help in the clinical area. It was the vision of Dr. Jacob Chandy to build up the Department as an integrated facility comprising of all the various neurological disciplines and, in keeping with the general guidelines of development of Christian Medical College, integrating clinical services, education and research.
The Department of Neurological Sciences is multidisciplinary consisting of the following divisions. The current Head of the Department is Dr. Sanjith Aaron. This is a rotating headship every four years.
