Neurology Unit
The first department of neurological sciences in India was started at the Christian Medical College Hospital Vellore in 1949. In the initial years, the department was catering to both neurosurgical and neurology patients. The Neurology Unit became fully established in 1983. Since then, our past alumni, through their dedication and hard work, moulded it into one of the best state-of-the-art patient-cantered units in India.
The Neurology team, with its dynamic team of doctors and staff and the latest in high-precision diagnostic tools and lab support, is delivering cutting-edge treatment for all routine and complex neurological disorders.
We take pride in teamwork and a multidisciplinary approach to give the best treatment for our patients through a comprehensive patient care model.
The neurology team consists of neurologists, nurses specialized in neurological care, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, neuro-electrophysiologists, neuropsychologists, speech therapists, nurse educators, neuro- research staff, and the neurology office staff.
As part of the Department of Neurological Sciences, we work closely with our sister units (neurocritical care, neurosurgery, neurochemistry, neurophysiology, neuropathology, and paediatric neurology) and also with neuroradiology and interventional neuroradiology, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, clinical genetics, cardiology, vascular surgery, and biomedical engineering teams.
Emergencies like acute strokes, Guillain-Barre syndrome, myasthenic crises, cerebral hypoxia, and demyelinating disorders are routinely handled. Rare and challenging immune-related neurological disorders, neuroinfectious diseases, neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases, and genetic disorders are diagnosed and given the latest therapies available.
We have one of the best neuro- electrophysiology lab services with dedicated, experienced staff.
Subspecialties in neurology include stroke services, epilepsy, neuromuscular, movement disorders, and cognitive neurology and chemo denervation clinics .
We run outpatient clinics and specialty multidisciplinary clinics on all days except on Saturdays and Sundays. Inpatients are admitted in both the general wards and the semiprivate and private rooms. We have a dedicated neurology intensive care unit for critically ill patients.
We run the DM Neurology course and also the BSC Neuro Electrophysiology course. We also offer post-doctoral fellowship courses, guide PhD students, and have international student visitors and exchange programs.
The Neurology Unit has a team of dedicated research staff participating in various national and international clinical trials and research activities. We have facilities for large-scale data collection, which aids in advancing personalized medicine, and we also have international collaborations with academic and pharmaceutical partners, giving patients access to novel therapies before they become widely available.
The department has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, and our faculty has been contributing to the development of neurology at the national and international levels.
We are also active in community education and preventative care, holding public seminars, workshops, and informational resources to help educate the community on neurological health and encourage preventive care and early detection of neurological disorders.
The neurology department is committed to continuous quality improvement. With the help of the Quality Management Cell, we continuously monitor patient outcomes, staff performance, and treatment effectiveness to ensure that the department remains at the forefront of neurological care.
