Neuro Speech Therapy

Speech Language Pathologists (SLP’s) are therapists working with the abnormalities observed with speech, communication, and swallowing, which are mostly seen in patients with neurological disorders. SLP’s are a part of a multidisciplinary team that is involved with empathic patient care, comprehensive therapy, and clinical research. The work involves examination and diagnosing components of speech, language, communication, as well as addressing concerns such as difficulties with swallowing. Along with the team of treating doctors, an SLP also provides training as well as education to the family and opinion for the treatment provided. The conditions that are looked at range from neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, stroke, stuttering, dysarthria, and others like developmental delay. Various bedside assessments are conducted to understand the patient’s status and interventions in terms of breathing exercises, tongue exercises, swallowing techniques are provided to strengthen muscles involved in production of sound and rehabilitation. Education involves training the both the patient and family in the aftercare aspects of treatment and strategies to aid in recovery of deficits observed during examination.
