About Neurosurgery Unit II

Neurosurgery Unit II has vast experience in the treatment of neurosurgical disorders of the brain and spine. This includes complex brain and spine tumours, aneurysms and other vascular malformations, Chiari malformations, trigeminal neuralgia, degenerative spine disease and trauma. We use state-of-the art technology such as operating microscopes, neuronavigation, intraoperative ultrasonography, ultrasonic aspirators, high-speed drills, bone scalpels, and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring to achieve the best surgical results and maximise patient safety.

Our unit has a subspecialty interest in paediatric neurosurgical conditions such as spinal dysraphism, paediatric brain and spinal cord tumours, hydrocephalus, encephaloceles, Moyamoya disease and craniosynostosis in addition to the general adult and paediatric neurosurgical work that we are involved with. We are in charge of running a one-year clinical fellowship in Paediatric Neurosurgery.

We have also been performing stereotactic procedures including biopsies and radiosurgery for over three decades. We are in the process of reviving the art of lesioning for patients with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and dystonia. Lesioning procedures, though irreversible, are far less expensive and affordable to patients in the Indian scenario compared to deep brain stimulation procedures.

The training of neurosurgical residents is of paramount importance in our unit, with an emphasis placed on the art of history taking and bedside examination. Detailed discussion of patients, their radiological findings and surgical strategies are presented weekly. Journal clubs and seminars are conducted every Saturday.

Our unit has been actively involved in research leading to numerous high-impact publications on neurocysticercosis, CNS tuberculosis, uninstrumented cervical corpectomy, spinal dysraphism, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring.

In order to ensure that our patients receive comprehensive care, we collaborate and/or have multi-disciplinary team meetings with the departments of Radiology, Endocrinology, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Urology, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, and Physical Medicine and Rehabiliation.
