Epilepsy Specialty

Overview

The Epilepsy Specialty consists of a multidisciplinary team of physicians, surgeons, nurses, and technicians dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients with epilepsy. Our core mission is to deliver high-quality patient care, encompassing accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, counseling, and, when necessary, surgical interventions for complex cases. In alignment with our institutional goals, we are also actively involved in teaching, academic pursuits, and research aimed at advancing epilepsy care.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing epilepsy can range from straightforward to highly complex cases. Our approach begins with a thorough clinical evaluation and is supported by a wide array of diagnostic tools. These include standard and advanced EEGs, various imaging techniques such as MRI, PET, and SPECT scans, cognitive testing, and occasionally, invasive testing procedures. This comprehensive diagnostic arsenal ensures precise and individualized patient assessments.

Treatment

Epilepsy treatment is highly patient-specific and tailored to individual needs. We consider socio-economic factors when prescribing and managing medications, ensuring that each patient’s treatment plan is both effective and accessible. Our monitoring capabilities span various levels to provide continuous and optimal care, adapting to the evolving needs of our patients.

Patient Education

Epilepsy education is a crucial component of our care strategy. We have specialized nurses who provide detailed education to patients and their families. For more complex questions, our physicians and epilepsy experts offer in-depth guidance and support to ensure patients fully understand their condition and treatment options.

Education

Teaching is an essential part of delivering excellent healthcare. In addition to educating neurology residents, we offer an outstanding graduate program in neuro-electrophysiology. This program provides comprehensive epilepsy education and training in patient monitoring techniques, equipping future healthcare professionals with the skills necessary to manage epilepsy effectively.

Advanced Treatment Options

Some patients with epilepsy experience difficult-to-treat seizures. For these individuals, we offer advanced treatment options, including specialized ketogenic diets and epilepsy surgery. Patients requiring advanced evaluation and treatment are enrolled in our refractory epilepsy program. We also provide multidisciplinary treatments, including rehabilitation programs, to address the complex needs of these patients.

Research

Any advanced epilepsy program necessitates ongoing research to enhance patient care and expand our understanding of epilepsy. We actively engage in research and explore rare treatment options, involving patients in discussions to ensure they are informed and involved in their care decisions.

Multidisciplinary Approach

Our epilepsy program thrives on a multidisciplinary approach, integrating the expertise of various specialists to provide holistic care. We collaborate closely with neuropsychologists, dietitians, social workers, and rehabilitation therapists to address all aspects of epilepsy management, ensuring comprehensive and cohesive patient care.
