Research Activities
The unit has the advantage of being under the Department of Neurological Sciences with a strong interdisciplinary including neurophysiology lab and neurochemistry lab. In response to our needs, the lab does inhouse testing for various metabolic disorders and lysosomal enzymes estimation for biochemical diagnosis and monitoring. The unit also liaises with clinical Biochemistry and Pharmacology for all the anti-seizure medications, therapeutic drug monitoring and acylcarnitine screening test which helps in monitoring child who are on polypharmacy due to drug resistant epilepsy and various metabolic disorders. This interdepartmental collaboration has resulted in several peer reviewed PUBMED indexed publications in national and international journals and culminating in a better patient care.
The unit has also partnered along with other reputed institutions across the country and world in characterising the phenotype of several rare genetic epilepsies. Clinical trials are ongoing for some of the rare neurometabolic and neurogenetic disorders.
Clinical trials and post-trial access treatment have been available for neuromuscular disorders such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and also, we have children with spinal muscular atrophy receiving antisense oligonucleotides therapy on a compassionate basis.
Our Unit has been participating as one of the active centres contributing data to ICMR registry on rare diseases since 2019.
Training & Education Program
- Post Doctoral fellowship course in Paediatric Neurology (offered by the institution) is a 2-year training program (Eligibility: MD/DNB Paediatrics)
- DM in Paediatric Neurology is a 3-year program under the NMC (Eligibility: MD/DNB Paediatrics)
- The faculty are resource persons for national and international conferences and various CME and webinars.
- Postgraduates in Paediatrics, adult Neurology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Developmental Paediatrics have their rotations in this unit.
- Visitor observers for short-term and long-term from mission hospitals and remote areas are permitted for training as per institutional rules.
