Neuromuscular Disorder

Overview

Neuro-muscular disorders primarily include conditions affecting peripheral nerves, muscles, and the neuromuscular junction. Examples of these disorders are myopathy, myasthenia gravis, motor neuron disease, and neuropathies. Given the rarity and complexity of some of these conditions, focused care is essential for their evaluation, diagnosis, monitoring, and management. Our primary goal is to deliver personalized patient care through accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, counseling, and multidisciplinary interventions. We work closely with the departments of physical medicine and rehabilitation, medical genetics, and radiology to provide optimal care for our patients. Additionally, we are actively involved in teaching, academic activities, and research to advance the understanding and treatment of neuromuscular disorders.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing neuromuscular disorders requires a comprehensive clinical evaluation and a variety of diagnostic tools. Our approach includes thorough clinical assessments, electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), muscle biopsies, genetic testing, and advanced imaging techniques such as neuromuscular ultrasound and MRI. These tools enable us to accurately diagnose conditions such as muscular dystrophies, motor neuron diseases, neuropathies, and myopathies, ensuring precise and individualized assessments for our patients.

Treatment

Treatment of neuromuscular disorders is highly individualized and patient-centric. We develop tailored treatment plans that consider each patient’s unique circumstances and needs. Our treatment modalities include pharmacological interventions, physical and occupational therapy, assistive devices, and, when necessary, surgical interventions. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life and functional abilities of our patients through comprehensive and continuous care.

Patient Education

Education is a vital component of our neuromuscular services. Specialized nurses and therapists provide detailed education to patients and their families about neuromuscular disorders, treatment options, and management strategies. For more complex inquiries, our physicians and experts offer in-depth guidance to ensure patients and their families are well-informed and supported.

Advanced Treatment Options

For patients with complex or refractory neuromuscular disorders, we offer advanced treatment options, including innovative pharmacological therapies, advanced physical and occupational therapy techniques, and surgical interventions. Our multidisciplinary approach ensures that patients receive comprehensive care, addressing all facets of their condition. We also provide access to clinical trials and experimental therapies when appropriate.

Education

Teaching is fundamental to our mission of providing excellent healthcare. We conduct regular bedside and didactic teaching sessions for neurology residents and run programs to educate other healthcare professionals on managing neuromuscular disorders. Additionally, we offer specialized training programs in neurophysiology and rehabilitation.

Research

Research is essential to advancing our understanding and treatment of neuromuscular disorders. Our team is actively involved in research projects aimed at improving patient care and expanding knowledge in the field. We collaborate with various departments, including genetics, molecular biology, and specialists in neuromuscular ultrasound, to explore new diagnostic and treatment options. By involving patients in clinical trials and experimental treatments, we ensure our care is based on the latest scientific evidence.
